Queen of Katwe - Best bit is the rapping at the end, and the very moving credits, whichshow the real story to be inspiring in a way this film is not. Phiona and her family struggles to make endsmeet, and yet she does something that is not conventionallyeconomically active.

Reviewed by Gordon-11 This film tells the story of a teenage girl from a Ugandan ghetto. Sheis discovered by a chess teacher to be brilliant in chess, and henceshe embark on a journey on international chess championships to lifther out of the ghetto. Phiona and her family struggles to make endsmeet, and yet she does something that is not conventionallyeconomically active. The hardship of living in a ghetto is welldepicted in the film, especially in the eviction scene and the caraccident scene. The story is touching, especially when it tells howPhiona is under pressure. I notice how they depict Phiona underpressure during a chess game, and the opponents looking confident bystaring fiercely into Phiona. This adds dimension to the story. The cinematography captures the true colors and life in a slum ofUganda, Africa. The characters were really believable and the actingwas excellent. Madina Nalwanga's acting was very convincing and true toher heart. She understands how to portray her emotions in front of thecamera. The children in the film were brilliant and all the cast gavegood performances. Some scenes were heartbreaking and moving. Mira Nairdirects her actors with great skill and confidence which is visible onthe screen. Its really beautiful to experience another culture and Iwas very happy to experience Uganda. A big congrats to Mira Nair for agood film. I met Mira Nair few years ago when she came to San Franciscofor a film premiere. She was very nice and sweet lady. Slum life is well depicted but sanitised-this is a Disney film but there is no dramatic tension, and no humourto leaven the mix. We know what is going to happen to Phiona Disneyfilm again and it duly does. If the film had been aboutRobert Katende -a real life star- not Phiona, it would have had a lotmore potential. Best bit is the rapping at the end, and the very moving credits, whichshow the real story to be inspiring in a way this film is not. For the record I thought The Jungle Book was pretty poor too.
